The Degree in Translation and Language Teaching is a university program designed from the outset to prepare students for two in-demand professions: translator and foreign language teacher, both highly sought after in the field of linguistic studies.

This degree offers updated, specialized, and multidisciplinary studies, aligning with the demands of the current job market and adapting to the characteristics of today's multilingual, global, and digital society. Distinctive features:

  • A trilingual curriculum in which students attain C2 proficiency in English and Spanish, along with C1 proficiency in a second foreign language (French or German).
  • The option to study a third foreign language (French or German) and achieve a C1 level.
  • Training in two professions with specialization in one of the following areas:
    • Translation and Interpretation (MTI).
    • Language Education (MEL).

  Students must choose one of these specializations.

  • Internships hold a key role, carrying a weight of 12 credits in the study plan to ensure hands-on professional experience.
  • Emphasis on digital literacy and business-related skills, particularly in computer-assisted translation and language teaching technologies.
  • State-of-the-art facilities that support practical training, including a computer lab equipped with translation software, a language laboratory, and interpreting booths for hands-on practice.
     

Learning Results

The training and learning process outcomes aims for students to be able to:

i.    Knowledge or contents

RAC1. Explain and analyze the functioning of the language, whether native or foreign, for the resolution of tasks pertaining to the field of translation and language teaching. 

RAC2. Identify the theoretical foundations of translation and language teaching. 

RAC3. Explain the basic aspects of the historical evolution of language teaching.

RAC4. Explain the historical evolution and operation of translation. 

RAC5. Identify and expose the fundamental aspects of language structure and meaning at the word, sentence and discourse levels. 

RAC6. Recognize common structural features among the languages studied.

RAC7. Explain the different geographical, historical, social, etc., features of languages in relation to each other. 

RAC8. Describe the professional, legal and economic aspects of the profession of translator and language teacher.

ii.   Abilities or skills

RAH9. Apply learning strategies related to their field of study and ICT competencies in the training process of the degree. 

RAH10. Analyze one's own culture and be aware of the diatopic diversity of Spanish, (re)knowledge of its varieties and equal respect for all of them for the resolution of translation and language teaching tasks.

RAH11. Analyze and value cultural diversity, multiculturalism and multilingualism in interpersonal communication for the appropriate resolution of translation and language teaching tasks.

RAH12. Recognize specialized communication situations and the associated discursive and terminological needs, as well as generate the appropriate resources for their resolution.

RAH13. Apply empirical and experimental research methods at the initial level in the study of topics in the field of translation and language teaching using quantitative and qualitative analysis tools.

RAH14. Master the basic concepts of linguistic intercomprehension and the methods of Romance intercomprehension for their application in didactics and translation.

RAH15. Analyze situations and communicative facts with the level of detail necessary to solve linguistic, translatological and language teaching-related problems.

RAH16. Design didactic proposals for language teaching that are well grounded in theory and in accordance with the assumptions of current methodological theories.

RAH17. Apply knowledge and respect for foreign cultures and civilizations (language B) in the appropriate resolution of tasks related to translation and language teaching.

iii.  Competencies

RACO18. Communicate proficiently in English (Language B) at a C2 level of the CEFR, both orally and in writing, across a wide range of situations of varying complexity within personal, social, professional, and academic contexts, with the goal of effectively carrying out translation and language teaching tasks.

RACO19. Communicate in Language C (French/German) at a C1 level of the CEFR, both orally and in writing, in diverse situations of different levels of complexity within personal, social, professional, and academic settings, to successfully perform translation and language teaching tasks.

RACO20. Effectively apply linguistic technologies in the fields of translation and language teaching.

RACO21. Translate complex general texts that are not specialized in the English-Spanish language combination, following the methodological principles of translation.

RACO22. Translate simple specialized texts in the English-Spanish language combination, adhering to the principles governing translation methodology.

RACO23. Use the specialized and professional language and metalanguage relevant to the fields of translation and language teaching with accuracy.

RACO24. Resolve linguistic, translation, and language teaching challenges by efficiently utilizing information and documentation management resources.

RACO25. Analyze linguistic implications and phenomena arising from the use of language in educational and technological contexts, proposing appropriate solutions.

RACO26. Utilize institutional and personal corpora for language analysis and conduct linguistic exploration through corpus compilation and annotation.

RACO27. Effectively organize and plan work related to academic and professional tasks within the scope of the degree program.

RACO28. Work both individually and collaboratively (including in interdisciplinary teams) to successfully complete academic and professional tasks related to the field of study.

Bilingual Education

The Degree in Translation and Language Teaching offers students a trilingual education in Spanish, English, and French or German. To be admitted to the program, students must have a B1 level in English. However, no prior knowledge of French or German is required.

The linguistic training provided in English throughout the degree enables students to attain C2 proficiency, allowing them to compete in the labor market on equal terms with graduates of similar programs in other European countries.

To achieve this, the curriculum is designed so that students begin learning English from the first year, with 50% of compulsory courses taught in English.

Additionally, students must choose a second foreign language: French or German. Despite starting with no prior knowledge, the training provided from the first year equips them with oral and written proficiency at a C1 level, enabling them to take courses taught in these languages during the second cycle of their studies.
